The 2014 Langhe La Villa is a blend of 60% Barbera and 40% Nebbiolo. Some 2,400 bottles were made, and that is 1,000 less than an average year because fruit selection was so rigorous in this difficult vintage. The wine presents a deep and super rich appearance with dark spice and thick black fruit. It's just a tad too rich and overdone, in my opinion, and the elegance of Nebbiolo has been taken over by the exuberance of the super ripe Barbera.

La Villa is a fascinating blend of 60% Larigi Barbera and 40% Arborina Nebbiolo, and it demonstrates Elio Altare's wisdom of blending these two wines. The wine has the aromatic lift and perfume of Nebbiolo with the plump fruit of Barbera, a combination that works beautifully in yielding a wine that is both approachable and structured.
