In true Nebbiolo fashion, the 2009 Barbaresco brings out all kinds of delicate nuances with licorice, tar, anisette and pressed rose. The wine shows elegance and nicely firming tannins that are smooth and fine. Pio Cesare has done a good job of taming down some of ripeness of the warm 2009 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023.
Pio Cesare is what I call a “lighthouse” winery. Steadfast and standing tall among the rest, it floods the landscape with inspiration and light for a slew of smaller, boutique wineries looking to find their way. Among the most historic brands in Alba, Pio Cesare has worked hard to promote Barolo and the territory of the Langhe across the globe. Their tireless efforts have been instrumental in creating a unified Barolo identity.
James Suckling: 93 Points
Aromas of shaved chocolate, some nuts and red berries. Full body, with compacted tannins that are soft and velvety. Serious intensity on the finish. Savory. Black truffle character now. Chinese spices. Better in 2015. This is a blend of three vineyards including Il Bricco.
