Tasting Notes

Robert Parker: 94 Points #219 Jun 2015 Jeb Dunnuck 94 Drink: 2016 - 2025 $40-$55 (45) Another classic Walla Walla Syrah, the 2012 Syrah River Rock Vineyard comes from the southern end of the Walla Walla Valley and the region known as "The Rocks." Giving up lots of damp earth, underbrush, pepper, iron and tobacco leaf, it's full-bodied, loaded with fruit and texture, and has good tannin that come through on the finish. These hedonistic beauties from this terroir always drink nicely in their youth, yet they surprise in the cellar as well and have lengthy drink window. In this case, I suspect this will be better in a year, and have 10-12 years or more of total longevity. As usual, this was a massive lineup by Washington's wild man, Charles Smith. Despite the larger-than-life persona, these wines are dead serious and are always some of the best I'm able to taste from the state. All of the Rhone varieties see 100% whole cluster, native fermentations and aging in mostly neutral French oak. At the top end, both the 2012 Royal City Syrah and 2012 Klein Syrah flirted with perfection, but the whole lineup is stacked with both quality and value. I think the 2012s are slightly superior to the '13s, but both of these vintages are strong here.
